Pauwel Kwak Glass with Wooden Stand — 33cl

35.94

The coachman’s glass — round-bottomed, so it cannot stand without its wooden holder.

Description

The story is that innkeeper Pauwel Kwak served coach drivers who were not allowed to leave their horses, so he made a glass that could hang from the coach. Whether or not that is true, the design is real: a bulbous round bottom that physically cannot stand on a table, a long neck flaring at the rim, and a turned wooden holder to keep it upright.

It pours and drinks oddly — the bulb empties in a rush at the end — and that is the point. The most recognisable glass in Belgium. 33cl, wooden stand included.

A note on filing: the Kwak is genuinely its own shape and does not belong to any of our categories. We have put it under chalices and goblets for want of anywhere better.
